What We Do

Natural Stone for San Diego County Homes

Flagstone patios and walkways, dry-stack and mortared stone walls, boulder placement, and stone steps. We build on a compacted base with the right setting bed so the stone stays level and tight through San Diego County's expansive-clay seasons.

Flagstone Patios & Walkways

Irregular and cut flagstone set in a sand-and-DG joint for a natural, permeable patio or path, or mortared over a concrete base for a solid, weed-free surface. We fit and blend the pieces so the joints stay tight and the surface walks flat.

Dry-Stack & Mortared Walls

Natural stone garden, seat, and low retaining walls, either dry-stacked for a rustic look or mortared for strength and height. Built on a proper footing so the wall does not lean or shed stones as the clay soil moves.

Boulders & Stone Steps

Boulder placement and outcroppings for grade changes and natural focal points, plus stone steps and stepping paths set solid so every tread is stable underfoot on a slope.

Compacted Base That Holds

The difference between stone that stays level and stone that heaves is the base. We excavate and compact an aggregate base sized for the use and the clay soil, then set the stone on the right bed so it holds its line for years.

How It Works

What Goes Into a BES Natural Stone Project

Four steps, nothing skipped. The same process on every job, big or small.

Free On-Site Quote & Stone Selection

We walk the space, measure, check grade and drainage, and help you choose a stone type and pattern that fits the home and the use. You get a written price and a material plan before we start.

Excavate & Compact the Base

We excavate to depth and build a compacted aggregate base engineered for the load and San Diego's expansive clay. For mortared stone we form and pour a concrete base. This is the step that decides whether the stone stays level.

Set the Stone

Flagstone is fit, cut, and set on a sand or mortar bed with tight, consistent joints; walls are laid and leveled course by course; boulders and steps are set solid and stable. We blend sizes and colors so the work looks natural.

Joint, Clean & Walkthrough

Joints are filled with polymeric sand, DG, or mortar depending on the design, the surface is cleaned, and we walk the finished stonework with you, checking that every tread and stone sits solid before we leave.

What We Specify on Every Natural Stone Job

The finish only lasts if what is underneath it is built right. Here is what BES specifies on natural stone work across San Diego County:

  • FlagstoneIrregular and dimensional flagstone in the color range that suits the home, set in sand-and-DG joints for a permeable look or mortared over concrete for a solid surface.
  • Bluestone & travertineCut bluestone and tumbled travertine for a more formal, uniform patio or pool surround, set on the right base for a flat, comfortable walking surface.
  • Wall & building stoneNatural ledgestone and fieldstone for dry-stack and mortared walls, sized and coursed for stability and a natural face.
  • BouldersPlaced boulders and outcropping stone for grade transitions, planting-bed anchors, and natural focal points, set into the grade so they read as if they belong.
  • Aggregate baseA compacted crushed-aggregate base, sized to the use and the clay soil, or a poured concrete base under mortared stone, which is what keeps the finished surface from heaving and settling.
  • JointingPolymeric sand, decomposed granite, or mortar joints depending on whether the design calls for permeable, natural, or fully solid, each filled and set to resist weeds and washout.

Honest Answers Before You Pick Up the Phone

Cost, permits, materials, and what actually holds up here. No sales spin.

How much does a natural stone patio cost in San Diego County?

Natural stone hardscape in San Diego County typically runs $25 to $50+ per square foot installed, depending on the stone, whether it is sand-set or mortared over concrete, and the amount of cutting and fitting. Dry-set flagstone falls lower; mortared bluestone or travertine over a slab runs higher. BES quotes a firm written price after measuring on site.

Natural stone or pavers or stamped concrete?

Each has its place. Natural stone gives genuine material and a one-of-a-kind look but costs more and needs skilled fitting. Pavers offer consistent shapes and easy repair. Stamped concrete gives a stone look at the lowest cost. Because BES builds all three, we give you the honest tradeoff for your budget and use rather than pushing one.

Will the stone crack or heave in clay soil?

Not when the base is right. Stone heaves when it is set on unprepared or under-compacted ground that moves with the clay. We excavate and compact an aggregate base sized for the use, or pour a concrete base under mortared stone, so the surface stays level through the wet-and-dry seasons.

Does a flagstone patio need sealing or maintenance?

Some. Sand-set flagstone benefits from periodic joint top-up and occasional weed control; mortared stone stays cleaner but the joints may need occasional attention. A breathable sealer can deepen the color and ease cleaning on porous stone. We tell you the real maintenance for the stone you choose at the quote.

Do I need a permit for stone hardscape?

A ground-level stone patio or path usually does not require a permit, but stone retaining walls over a certain height and structural work can. BES confirms whether your project needs a permit with the City of Poway or County of San Diego before starting.

Can you tie stonework into my existing concrete or pavers?

Yes, and it is a strength of ours. Because BES pours concrete and sets pavers as well, we can transition stone into existing flatwork cleanly, match levels, and build a concrete base under mortared stone as one continuous job rather than coordinating separate trades.

Natural Stone FAQs

Questions San Diego County Homeowners Ask Before Calling

How much does a natural stone patio cost in San Diego County?
Natural stone hardscape in San Diego County typically runs $25 to $50 or more per square foot installed, depending on the stone type, whether it is sand-set or mortared over concrete, and the amount of cutting. Dry-set flagstone costs less; mortared bluestone or travertine costs more. BES provides a firm written quote after an on-site measurement.
Which is better: natural stone, pavers, or stamped concrete?
Each has a place. Natural stone offers genuine, unique material at a higher cost and more skilled fitting; pavers offer consistency and easy repair; stamped concrete gives a stone look at the lowest cost. Because BES builds all three, it gives an honest tradeoff for your budget and use rather than pushing one option.
Will natural stone crack or heave in San Diego's clay soil?
Not when the base is prepared correctly. Stone heaves when set on unprepared or under-compacted ground that moves with expansive clay. BES excavates and compacts an aggregate base sized for the use, or pours a concrete base under mortared stone, so the surface stays level through wet and dry seasons.
Does a flagstone patio require maintenance?
Some. Sand-set flagstone benefits from periodic joint top-up and weed control, while mortared stone stays cleaner but joints may need occasional attention. A breathable sealer can deepen color and ease cleaning on porous stone. BES explains the real maintenance for the chosen stone at the quote.
Do I need a permit for a stone patio or wall?
A ground-level stone patio or path usually does not require a permit, but stone retaining walls above a certain height and structural work can. BES verifies requirements with the City of Poway or County of San Diego before starting.
What types of natural stone do you install?
BES installs flagstone, bluestone, travertine, ledgestone and fieldstone for walls, and placed boulders, matching the stone to the home's style and the project's use across patios, walkways, walls, steps, and outcroppings.
Can you build a natural stone retaining or seat wall?
Yes. BES builds dry-stack and mortared natural stone garden, seat, and low retaining walls on a proper footing sized for San Diego's clay soil, so the wall stays plumb and does not shed stones as the ground moves.
