Demo & Site Prep
If there is old concrete to remove, we break it out and haul it. Then we excavate to the right depth, typically 4 to 6 inches below finish grade for a residential driveway, and compact a proper aggregate base. This step is where shortcuts by other crews show up two years later.
Pour, Finish & Control Joints
We set forms, pour the structural concrete mix, screed to grade, and finish the surface (broom, stamp, trowel, or exposed aggregate). Control joints are placed or saw-cut at 8 to 10 foot intervals while the concrete is still workable, directing any future movement to the joint rather than the face of the slab.
Cure, Seal & Walkthrough
Concrete needs 7 days before vehicle traffic and 28 days to reach full strength. We apply a curing compound immediately after the pour. If sealing is in scope, we return at the 28-day mark. We walk the finished job with you before we pack up, if anything is not right, we fix it before we leave.
How We Build a Driveway That Lasts
San Diego County's inland soil is expansive clay. It shifts with moisture changes more than most homeowners realize. A driveway poured over a poorly compacted base on clay soil can heave and crack within a year or two, long after the crew that cut those corners has stopped answering the phone. Here is what BES specifies on every driveway project:
- Concrete mix3,000 to 4,000 PSI structural concrete, appropriate for San Diego County's climate and residential driveway load requirements.
- Reinforcement#3 or #4 rebar on 18-inch grid centers, or 6×6 welded wire mesh as a minimum. Heavier-use areas, RV access, heavy truck parking, always get rebar over wire mesh.
- Base aggregate4 to 6 inches of compacted class II road base below the slab. San Diego County's inland clay soils expand and contract with moisture. Skimping on base is where cracked driveways come from.
- Control jointsTooled or saw-cut at 8 to 10 foot spacing. These direct normal concrete movement to the joint rather than across the surface of the slab.
- Slab thickness4 inches minimum for standard residential driveways. 5 inches for RV pads or regular heavy vehicle access. Confirmed at the site visit and written into the quote.
- SealerPenetrating acrylic sealer protects from oil stains, water intrusion, and UV fading. Optional but recommended, especially on decorative finishes. Included in the quote if requested.

What will this cost?
Standard broom-finish driveways in San Diego County typically run $8 to $15 per square foot. Stamped or decorative finishes run $14 to $22 per square foot. A typical 2-car driveway (400 to 500 square feet) in plain concrete usually lands between $3,500 and $7,500. These are estimates only, the actual number depends on site conditions, any demo required, size, and finish. We give you a firm written number after the free site visit.
How long does the job take?
The pour itself typically runs 1 to 2 days. If there is existing concrete to demo, add a day for that. After the pour, plan on 7 days before vehicle traffic and 28 days for full strength. From the time you sign off on the quote to the day your car is back in the driveway, figure 2 to 3 weeks total, including scheduling.
Do I need a permit?
Generally yes. The City of Poway requires a permit for driveway replacement or new concrete installation. Properties in unincorporated San Diego County go through the County building department instead. BES handles the permit application and inspection coordination as part of the standard project scope. We confirm the exact requirement at your address during the quote visit.
Will my car be blocked?
Your driveway will be off limits for at least 7 days after the pour. For multi-car households, we try to sequence demo and prep to keep one lane open as long as possible, depending on your layout. We plan the logistics at the site visit so you know exactly what to expect before anything starts.
What if it cracks?
Some hairline cracking as concrete cures is normal and expected. Control joints are placed specifically to direct that movement to the joint rather than across the slab face. If you see cracking that concerns you after the job is done, call Raymond directly, the same number that quoted you. Structural issues from workmanship are something BES stands behind.
What about cleanup?
We haul all concrete debris, old slab pieces, form lumber, and job-site material before we leave. The driveway approach and adjacent areas get swept and rinsed. We walk the property with you at the end. If you spot something we missed, we handle it on the spot, not after we have driven away.
