We come to you, assess the site, measure the area, and check the grade for drainage. One of the first things we confirm is the slope away from the house, a patio that drains toward the foundation is a problem. You get a written price with finish options before we leave. No charge, no obligation.
Demo & Site Prep
If there is old concrete to remove, we break it out and haul it. Then we excavate and compact a class II aggregate base, typically 3 to 4 inches for a residential patio. San Diego County's inland clay soils need proper base preparation. Skipping this step is the most common reason concrete settles or cracks early.
Pour, Finish & Joints
We set forms, pour the structural mix, and screed to the correct drainage grade, typically 1/8 to 1/4 inch of slope per linear foot away from the house or any adjacent structure. An expansion joint is placed at the house foundation before the pour to allow the slab to move independently from the structure. Control joints are tooled or saw-cut at 6 to 8 foot spacing to direct normal concrete movement.
Cure, Seal & Walkthrough
Concrete needs 7 days minimum before foot traffic and 28 days to reach full strength. We apply a curing compound immediately after finishing. If sealing is in scope, we return at the 28-day mark. We walk the finished patio with you before we leave, anything that is not right gets fixed before we pack up.
How We Build a Patio That Lasts
San Diego County's inland soil is expansive clay. It shifts with moisture changes more than most homeowners realize. A patio poured over a poorly compacted base on clay soil can settle, crack, or drain back toward the house within a couple of years, long after the crew that cut those corners has stopped answering the phone. Here is what BES specifies on every patio project:
- Concrete mix3,000 to 4,000 PSI structural concrete, appropriate for San Diego County's residential patio applications and foot-traffic loads.
- Reinforcement#3 rebar or 6×6 welded wire mesh as a standard minimum. Heavier-load areas, under outdoor kitchen structures, around pool equipment pads, always get rebar over wire mesh.
- Base aggregate3 to 4 inches of compacted class II road base below the slab. Patio slabs sit on the same expansive clay soils as driveways. Proper base preparation is what separates slabs that last from ones that settle.
- Expansion jointA foam expansion joint is placed along the house foundation and any adjacent walls before the pour. This allows the patio slab to expand and contract independently from the structure and prevents cracks from forming at the connection point.
- Drainage slope1/8 to 1/4 inch per linear foot of fall away from the house or adjacent structures. Built into the form work before the pour. A patio that drains toward the foundation causes long-term moisture problems.
- Control jointsTooled or saw-cut at 6 to 8 foot spacing across the slab. Directs normal concrete movement to the joint rather than across the face of the slab.

How long does patio installation take?
The pour itself typically runs one day for a standard residential patio. If there is demo work, add a day. After the pour, plan on 7 days before foot traffic and 28 days for full strength. From signed quote to usable patio, budget 2 to 3 weeks total, including scheduling.
Do I need a permit for a patio?
It depends on size and attachment to the structure. The City of Poway and San Diego County each have their own thresholds. Attached patio covers or structures almost always require a permit even if the slab itself does not. BES confirms what is required for your specific project at the quote visit and handles permit coordination as needed.
Will the slope cause water to pool?
No, the opposite. A correctly sloped patio drains rainwater away from the house and toward the yard. We set the form work to achieve the right grade before the pour. The slope is subtle enough that it does not feel like a tilt underfoot, but effective enough to move water where it should go.
What if it cracks?
Control joints direct normal concrete movement to the joint rather than the slab face. Hairline cracks at joints are expected and normal. If you see cracking that concerns you after we leave, call Raymond directly, the same number that gave you the quote. Structural issues from workmanship are something BES stands behind.
What about cleanup?
We haul all demo debris, form lumber, and job-site material before we leave. The patio perimeter and adjacent areas get swept. We walk the finished job with you. If you spot anything we missed, we handle it before we drive away.
