Concrete Removal Services for Poway & San Diego County Homeowners
Whether you need one damaged section taken out or an entire driveway gone, BES handles the saw-cutting, breaking, loading, and hauling. Demo-only or as part of a replacement pour — your call.
Full Slab Removal
The entire concrete surface needs to go. We break it out in manageable sections, load it out, and leave the area clean and graded for your next step — whether that is a new pour with us, new landscaping, or a different contractor. Debris is hauled and disposed of properly. All of it is in the quote.
Saw-Cut Partial Removal
Only certain sections need replacing. Saw-cutting creates clean, straight cuts that isolate the bad panels without disturbing adjacent concrete. This is the right approach when a section of a driveway has settled or heaved but the rest of the slab is still sound. The cut edges are clean enough to pour new concrete directly against.
Demo Before New Pour
Most driveway, patio, and walkway replacement projects start with removing the old concrete. BES includes demo in the replacement scope — you get one quote that covers break-out, haul-away, base prep, and new pour. The demo step is not farmed out to a different crew.
Demo-Only Service
You do not need BES to pour the replacement. If you need existing concrete broken out, hauled, and the area left clean for another contractor or for landscaping, BES can do the demolition as a standalone job. Same crew, same equipment, same written quote.
What BES Does Before, During, and After a Concrete Demo
Demo looks straightforward but there are decisions to make before the jackhammer starts. Here is the process BES follows on every removal job.
Utility Locate & Site Assessment
Before anything gets broken, we call 811 (the California underground utility locate service) for any job where ground disturbance is involved. We identify the proximity of irrigation lines, gas, electrical conduit, and drainage. For patio or slab removal near the structure, we look at what is adjacent — stucco, planter walls, fence posts — and plan the demo sequence to avoid collateral damage. This assessment is part of the free site visit, not a separate step you pay for.
Saw-Cut & Section
Saw-cutting with a diamond-blade concrete saw creates straight, controlled cuts at the removal boundary. For partial removal, the saw-cut defines exactly where the demo ends and the existing concrete stays. For full removal on large slabs, we saw-cut the slab into sections that are small enough to handle and load out efficiently without bringing in equipment too heavy for the site. Dust suppression is standard on saw-cut work.
Break Out & Load
Electric or pneumatic jackhammers break the sectioned concrete into pieces. On larger jobs, a skid-steer or compact track loader moves material to the truck. All concrete debris is loaded and removed from the site. We do not stack broken concrete at the edge of the property and call it done — the truck takes it out on the same day as the demo.
Site Ready & Walkthrough
After the concrete is out, the area is raked and left at rough grade, ready for the next step. If the demo is part of a BES pour project, we proceed directly to base prep at this point. If it is a demo-only job, we walk the area with you, confirm the concrete is completely out, and verify the area matches what was agreed in the quote. Concrete disposal is handled at a licensed recycling facility — most recycled concrete becomes road base aggregate.
How BES Removes Concrete Without Collateral Damage
Concrete demolition is less about brute force and more about sequence. Breaking before saw-cutting leaves jagged, unpredictable edges. Working near a foundation without checking for utilities first is how irrigation lines get cut and retaining walls get damaged. BES follows a consistent process on every demo job regardless of size. Here is the equipment we use:
- Diamond blade sawUsed for all saw-cut work. Creates straight, clean cuts at the removal boundary. Water or vacuum-shroud dust suppression reduces concrete dust at the work site.
- Electric jackhammerFor most residential concrete demo, an electric jackhammer is quieter and more controlled than a pneumatic unit. Better for work near occupied homes and in tighter spaces.
- Pneumatic jackhammerFor heavy slabs, reinforced concrete, or larger removal areas where speed is a factor. Requires a compressor on-site.
- Skid-steer / compact loaderMoves broken concrete to the truck on larger jobs. BES uses compact equipment that fits through standard gate widths on residential properties — we confirm access at the site visit.
- Haul truck & disposalConcrete is dense — a standard 2-car driveway slab can weigh 8 to 12 tons. Proper hauling requires a licensed truck. BES disposes of concrete at permitted facilities. Most concrete demolition debris in San Diego County is recycled into road base.
- Rebar cuttingOlder residential concrete often contains rebar or wire mesh. If reinforcement is present, we cut it with angle grinders or bolt cutters as part of the breakout. Rebar is separated and recycled separately from the concrete.
Honest Answers About Concrete Removal
Cost, permits, what happens to adjacent structures, and what the area looks like when we leave. Straight answers, no sales pressure.
What does concrete removal cost?
Concrete demolition and removal in San Diego County typically runs $3 to $7 per square foot for a standard residential slab. That range covers labor, equipment, and hauling. Thicker slabs, heavily reinforced concrete, or difficult site access (narrow gate, steep slope) can push costs higher. These are estimates — the actual price depends on the specific conditions at your property. BES gives you a firm written number after the free site visit.
Do I need a permit for concrete demolition?
For most residential concrete removal in Poway — breaking out an old driveway, patio, or walkway — a demolition permit is not typically required as a standalone requirement. However, if the removal is in the public right-of-way (a city sidewalk), or if it is part of a project that requires a building permit for the replacement work, the demo is included under that permit. BES confirms what is required at your address during the quote visit.
Will the crew damage my lawn or landscaping?
We assess site access at the free quote visit and plan equipment size and entry point around what is there — existing grass, planting beds, irrigation lines. For tight access situations, we use smaller equipment or hand tools. Jackhammer debris gets loaded directly rather than dragged across landscaped areas. We cannot guarantee zero impact on adjacent ground cover, but we plan to minimize it and clean up before we leave.
Can you remove just one section?
Yes. Saw-cut partial removal is a standard part of what BES does. If a single section of your driveway has settled or heaved while the rest is still in good condition, we can saw-cut the boundary, remove the bad section, and leave clean cut edges for a new pour. We assess whether the remaining concrete is worth keeping at the site visit — if the surrounding sections are also near end of life, we will say so honestly so you can decide.
How long does demo take?
A standard 2-car driveway demo typically runs one full day. Smaller patio or slab removals are often a half day. Large or complex jobs — full patio plus retaining wall, multiple areas at once — may run 2 days. We give you a time estimate on the written quote so you know what to plan for.
What happens to the old concrete?
It goes to a licensed concrete recycling facility. In San Diego County, most demolished concrete is processed into recycled aggregate, which ends up as road base material under new pavement. BES does not dump concrete. The hauling and disposal is included in the quote — no separate disposal fee shows up after the fact.
Demo Done Right the First Time
A demo job that damages an irrigation main, undercuts an adjacent footing, or leaves broken concrete stacked at the property line is not a completed job. BES has been removing concrete in San Diego County since 2016. The same crew that shows up to pour also shows up when it is just a removal job.
